
There is an important difference between a breaker that trips and a breaker that will not go back on. A breaker that trips occasionally under heavy load is telling you the circuit is busy. A breaker that refuses to reset, or snaps straight back off the moment you release it, is telling you there is a fault on that circuit right now — and it is refusing to reconnect for a reason.

A surprising share of “it will not reset” calls are a breaker that was never fully reset. When a breaker trips, the handle does not go all the way to OFF — it lands in a middle position. Pushing it from that middle position toward ON does nothing, because the mechanism has not been released.
The correct sequence is firm and deliberate: push the handle all the way to OFF until you feel it click, then push it all the way to ON. If it holds, the trip was a one-off overload and you have your answer. If it snaps straight back off, the fault is real.
Do this once. If it will not hold after one properly executed reset, stop. Repeatedly forcing a breaker back on against a live fault is how a bad situation becomes a fire.
If it resets and runs for a few seconds or minutes before tripping, the circuit is drawing more current than it is rated for. Something has been added, or several things are running together. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset, then reintroduce items one at a time — the one that trips it is your answer.
If a circuit trips reliably under normal household use, the circuit is undersized for what you are asking of it, and the real fix is a dedicated circuit rather than a bigger breaker. An immediate, violent trip means a hot conductor is touching a neutral or a ground somewhere. Often there is a sharp bang, a flash, or a scorch mark at an outlet or fixture. This will not resolve on its own and cannot be reset around. The circuit stays off until someone finds the contact point.
Common causes: a nail or screw driven through a cable during work on the house, a damaged extension lead, a failed appliance, a rodent-chewed cable in an attic or crawl space, or water reaching a box.
Current escaping to ground rather than returning on the neutral. This is what GFCI protection detects, and it is why bathroom, kitchen, garage and exterior circuits behave this way most often. Moisture is the usual cause. If a GFCI outlet somewhere else in the house has tripped, several rooms can go dead at once — check every GFCI you have, including ones in unrelated rooms.
Breakers are mechanical devices and they wear out, particularly ones that have tripped many times over the years. A breaker that feels loose, will not stay in the ON position with nothing at all connected to the circuit, or is noticeably warmer than its neighbours has probably failed internally. Newer homes and renovated circuits use AFCI breakers, which detect the signature of arcing rather than simple overcurrent. They trip on things a standard breaker ignores — a damaged cable, a loose terminal, a failing motor. They also nuisance-trip on some older appliances. Either way the answer is the same: find out which, rather than swap it for a standard breaker, which removes the protection entirely.
Two shortcuts turn a repairable fault into a dangerous one.
Repeatedly resetting. Every reset re-energises the fault. On a short circuit that means another surge of current through whatever is touching, which is how insulation ignites inside a wall.
Fitting a larger breaker. This is the most damaging thing a homeowner can do to a panel. The breaker is sized to protect the wire, not the appliance. Putting a 20-amp breaker on wiring rated for 15 amps means the wire can now run past its safe temperature without anything shutting off. It will not trip. It will just get hot inside the wall. We find this in older homes regularly, and it is a genuine fire risk.
If a circuit keeps overloading, the answer is another circuit — not a bigger number on the breaker.
Do not open the panel. The service conductors inside stay live with the main breaker off, and there is nothing behind that cover a homeowner can safely diagnose.
Finding a short is a process of isolation, not inspection. We disconnect the circuit at the panel and test it dead to confirm the fault is on the circuit rather than in the breaker. We then split the circuit at accessible junction points to narrow which leg carries the fault, which usually locates it to a room or a short run of cable rather than requiring the whole house to be opened up.
From there it is a repair — a damaged cable section replaced, a failed device swapped, a termination remade — and a test under load before we leave. No, and this is the single most dangerous shortcut in domestic electrics. The breaker protects the wire, not the appliance. Fitting a larger one lets the wiring exceed its safe temperature with nothing to shut it off. If the circuit genuinely needs more capacity, it needs a dedicated circuit run in the correct conductor size.
Usually a GFCI. One GFCI outlet often protects a chain of downstream outlets across several rooms, so a single trip in the garage or a bathroom can kill sockets elsewhere. Check every GFCI in the house, including in rooms that still have power.
If it happened once under heavy load and has been fine since, it was probably a simple overload. If it is recurring, happens at the same time of day, or coincides with a particular appliance, get it looked at — intermittent faults are usually a connection degrading rather than a problem that fixed itself.
A dead circuit with no heat or smell is normally scheduled work. A breaker that will not hold alongside heat, buzzing or a burning smell is urgent — tell us that when you call and we will prioritise it.
